The Old Course

The links that shaped the game: double greens, hidden bunkers and the walk home over the Swilcan Bridge.

The Swilcan Bridge and the R&A clubhouse, St Andrews

No course carries more history. Golf has been played on this strip of linksland beside St Andrews Bay for around six hundred years, and the Old Course has hosted The Open more often than any other venue.

It can puzzle on first acquaintance: seven huge double greens, fairways shared by holes running in opposite directions, and bunkers you cannot see from the tee. Its genius shows in the wind, when the best line changes from one day to the next. That is why so many great players have come to love it.

Playing as a visitor

Tee times are managed by the St Andrews Links Trust. Some are available in advance, and a significant share is allocated through a daily ballot. A handicap certificate is required, and the course is normally closed for golf on Sundays. We plan more than one chance at the ballot and an excellent alternative.

Visitor policies, handicap requirements and tee-time procedures are set by each club and can change. We confirm the current position for your dates and never assume or guarantee access.
