Royal Dornoch: Championship

Golf has been recorded at Dornoch since the early 1600s. Plateau greens, with gorse ablaze in late spring.

Gorse and fairway at Royal Dornoch, Sutherland

Records of golf at Dornoch go back to 1616, among the earliest anywhere. The Championship course, shaped by Old Tom Morris and the club's long-serving secretary John Sutherland, is known for raised, plateau greens that shrug off anything less than a precise approach.

Donald Ross, who went on to design many of America's great courses, grew up and learned the game here. North American visitors often find that connection especially moving.

Playing as a visitor

Tee times are in high demand in summer, and a handicap certificate is required. The Struie course makes a fine second round.

Visitor policies, handicap requirements and tee-time procedures are set by each club and can change. We confirm the current position for your dates and never assume or guarantee access.
